A bone-chilling shriek filled the air.
Everything seemed to stop. Even the brigands froze on the river.
I looked back toward the mast.
Evra was standing on the platform. Her black robes billowing out toward our enemies in waving tendrils, her hair standing out from her skull, her face a corpse-like white, her mouth a round black hole, her eyes glaring dark fires!
She held her arms out toward the brigands. There was something in her hands.
Stones!
A black stone and a white!
Her shriek ended. She smashed the stones together toward our enemies. They seemed to spark!
She began to chant in her strange native tongue. The words seemed to be in my head without entering through my ears. They dominated my senses. I could not look away.
I understood nothing except this was a maledictio, a curse from the stygian pits of her dark god, Danu.
