Synopsis
Into the Storm is the first book of The Violent Season trilogy. This first novel tells the story of two young Americans, Pat Green and Mickey Dwyer, as they go from childhood innocence in the streets of New York City to experienced infantrymen in the crucible of the Vietnam war. Growing up in the late 1960's, Pat and Mick are concerned only with getting through school, finding work, and making a life with their girlfriends. Then they find themselves in the army seeming chasing their own deaths in the jungles of Vietnam.

If Trinh allowed himself to think of such thinks, he would admit that he would gladly trade all the days left to him just to be able to spend one evening with his father reading from the book of Apollinaire’s poetry that Trinh had burned so many years ago in the mountains near the Chinese border […] His father’s body was rotting in some undiscovered pit outside Hanoi where the Japanese had dumped it […] The ashes of Apollinaire were scattered across the dark hills that sheltered Vietnam from the Chinese […] Sergeant Major Trinh’s only reality was that on this morning, he was on a wooded ridgeline with twenty soldiers of the People’s Army of Vietnam, a snot-nose sub-lieutenant with a party card and a university degree, the enemy near, and a mission to accomplish.
That was the limit of Sergeant Major Trinh’s allowable reality.
